Exhibition Stand Design Trends for 2014
Linda Tucknott, Marketing Manager at Quantum Exhibitions examines the trends to look out for in 2014 within the exhibition/event industry.
2014 is looking at being a really exciting time for design as various trends come through from digital, on-line presence, interiors, and much more. Colour palettes are playing a significant part and with trends like global fusion and precious elements, which has been highlighted by Dulux in their colour trend predictions.
Typography has seen an increase in styles used, making the text easier to read and more attractive which allows brands to be more adventures with graphics and literature at exhibitions. Strong typographic headlines, especially 3D rendered, are also becoming dominant in all types of media and marketing, from magazine covers to large outdoor media boards/adverts. Coming from the digital trend, many websites will choose to adopt new fonts and layouts to increase user experience which can also be applied to exhibitions where customers want to know things now and be engaged by their surroundings.
Images are also changing with the increase in colour overlays, blurriness and even photoshop filters to make images more enticing to the audience. Making images more vibrant and creative as images take over the presence or need for words.
With inspiration taken from various areas on design it seems interiors and colours this year have 4 main themes. Dulux have predicted the first trend as the global fusion of tribal reflection resulting from clashing cultures and in contrast colours that form digital patterns and eclectic interiors. The Digital Nomad creates a style where traditional boundaries are no longer defined.
The Precious Elementals trend instinctively respects and values our earth’s natural resources, elements and geometric forms. The Romantic Spirits trends search for ways to incorporate nostalgia and past items into their technologically-dominated world. Looking forward the future is bright. However, The Retro Visionaries know this world would not look the same without retrospective design, influenced by styles of the late 20th century. Colour plays a huge part when designing an exhibition stands and by understanding the brand and what they want to achieve will give you an idea of how colour can be used to do this.
Personalisation, convenience, seamlessness, sustainability, user-centred design is a huge trend in the future of retail. This will mean more interaction with packaging like what Coke have done with their named bottles, personalised Dairy Milk bars, augmented reality etc) and a shift back from the rational to emotional in order to engage on a deeper level.
What this means for Exhibitions stand design in 2014 is a huge use of colour as an emotional tool to engage audiences, combined with creative structures and layouts to give a deeper level of brand heritage and essence. At a glance easy to read and impactful fonts will be used, making everything quicker and simpler for the customer to understand as society today craves more information in a faster way. The new popularity of light effects will increase the use of more LED light boxes and fractured light to highlight products. This goes hand in hand with new technologies like touch screens and interactive walls where users can be part of the Exhibition stand, therefore connecting back again with the deeper level of emotional connection with the brand.
Colours will be dominated by the brand choices but you will see brands either going for something really unique with vibrant colours or the look will be simplistic with a limited colour palette. The Scandinavian style Exhibition Stands which dominated 2013 will take on a new look in the form of more eclectic/quirky stands which are unique in their design style and materials used. Eco is still the topic on peoples lips and you will see an emphasis on more businesses wanting to be perceived as being sustainable by using clever design ideas and structures made from recycled or items not usually associated with the industry they operate in.
All in all 2014 is going to be exciting for designers, as they follow their inspiration for design from various trends, taking inspiration from all around.
