Harrogate historically was an epicentre for events in 1903 trade exhibitions took place in the grand surroundings of the Royal Hall theatre by the 1930’s Harrogate really started to gain its reputation as the place to hold business events and by 1937 the town was holding 30 events a year.
In 1959 Event halls were built and by 1961 they hosting 170 annual conferences and welcoming 44,000 people to the region.
Further halls were added in 1966 and 1971, the decision was made to enhance Harrogate’s presence as a business hub and the Harrogate International Centre or HIC was born, a 2000-seat main auditorium opened in 1982 with the hosting of the Eurovision Song contest,
Throughout the eighties and nineties HIC continued to grow and establish more and more exhibitions, however it was becoming increasingly clear that the HIC was becoming a little tired and in need of some attention. In 2014 the decision was made to increase the exhibition space up to 18,500 square metres (199,000 sq ft) at an estimated cost of £45 million.
